When it comes to getting the most out of your tires while enjoying a comfortable ride, wheel balancing is key. In fact, it's one of the most crucial aspects of tire maintenance.

But what is wheel balancing and why is it important?

Wheel balancing, as the name suggests, is the process of ensuring that your wheels are correctly balanced. This means that each wheel has the same weight distribution around its circumference.

Wheel balancing is a necessary part of preventative auto maintenance because it helps to prevent premature tire wear and allows you to get the most life out of your tires. Additionally, wheel balancing ensures a smoother ride which provides greater comfort to passengers. It's also crucial for safety, as unbalanced tires can lead to vibrations and instability while driving.

To learn how wheel balancing is performed and how often you should have your wheels balanced, check out our blog post linked below!

What is the REPAIR Act?

The Right to Equitable and Professional Auto Industry Repair Act, or REPAIR Act, is a bill that was introduced to the House of Representatives by Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) on February 2, 2022 that:

1) Requires automobile manufacturers to make vehicle-generated data available to vehicle owners and their designees (i.e. repair shops) directly and in real-time.

2) Prevents automobile manufacturers from requiring or recommending the use of a particular brand's parts or tools during the repair process.

To find out why this bill is important, check out our new blog post https://www.wiltonautoandtire.com/About-Us/Blog/ArticleID/162/What-is-the-REPAIR-Act-and-Why-Does-It-Matter

The differential system is the part of a vehicle that transitions engine power to the wheels allowing the wheels to rotate at different speeds.

Why would the wheels need to rotate at different speeds? Imagine taking a right turn. Notice that the wheels on the right-hand side of the vehicle hug tightly to the curb and have to move less distance than the wheels on the left-hand side of the vehicle which swing out during the turn. In this instance, the left wheel or wheels require more power than the right wheel or wheels in order to make a smooth turn. Thus, the differential system divides the engine power to meet the different power requirements for each wheel to rotate in any given scenario.

As the name suggests, differential fluid is the fluid that lubricates the differential. As mentioned, the differential is actually a system of moving parts, which includes ring gears and pinion gears. Differential fluid is essential in ensuring these parts maintain proper lubrication in order to move fluidly and create a smooth ride. As the parts of the differential system move against each other, they create friction which produces heat. Differential fluid also serves to reduce this heat.

Over time, the heat and friction can lead to a breakdown of the differential fluid, accumulation of metal debris in the fluid, or low levels of differential fluid within the differential system. When the differential fluid becomes contaminated or depleted, it can lead to premature wear and tear, excessive noise, and performance issues. If these problems persist, it may cause complete system failure requiring replacement of the entire differential system.

In order to prevent damage to your vehicle and avoid costly repairs, it is imperative to have the differential fluid changed as part of your vehicle's regular preventative maintenance.
