When was the last time you had your brake fluid changed? If you can't remember, it's time for a brake flush. All fluids in a vehicle play an important role in its overall health, and brake fluid is no exception. Why does brake fluid need to be replaced regularly, and what happens when it isn't?

Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that transmits the force from your foot on the brake pedal to the brake pads or shoes. Over time, brake fluid becomes contaminated with moisture and other impurities. This can cause corrosion and other problems in the braking system.

Brake fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles to prevent these problems. A brake flush is a service in which all the old brake fluid is flushed out of the system and replaced with new fluid.

But brake fluid isn't the only fluid in your vehicle you should be mindful of…

The other five primary fluids are:

** Engine Oil: Engine oil is a lubricant used in vehicles to reduce wear and tear on the engine. It also helps to cool the engine by absorbing heat. Engine oil must be changed every 3,000 miles or three months to keep the engine running smoothly.

** Transmission Fluid: Transmission fluid lubricates and cools the moving parts of a transmission. It should be changed every 30,000 miles or every two years because it breaks down over time and can cause damage to the transmission.

** Coolant: Coolant is a fluid that helps to keep your engine from overheating. It circulates through the engine and absorbs heat, then releases it into the air. Coolant needs to be changed every 45,000 miles to maintain optimal performance and avoid any potential damage to your engine.

** Power Steering Fluid: Power steering fluid is a hydraulic fluid used in automobiles to assist the driver in turning the wheel. It needs to be changed every 30,000 miles because it breaks down over time and can lead to corrosion and other problems.

** Differential Fluid: Differential fluid is a hydraulic fluid used to lubricate a car's differential. It is recommended that differential fluid be changed every 30,000 miles because it can become contaminated with dirt and debris, leading to wear and tear on the differential.

When it comes to getting the most out of your tires while enjoying a comfortable ride, wheel balancing is key. In fact, it's one of the most crucial aspects of tire maintenance.

But what is wheel balancing and why is it important?

Wheel balancing, as the name suggests, is the process of ensuring that your wheels are correctly balanced. This means that each wheel has the same weight distribution around its circumference.

Wheel balancing is a necessary part of preventative auto maintenance because it helps to prevent premature tire wear and allows you to get the most life out of your tires. Additionally, wheel balancing ensures a smoother ride which provides greater comfort to passengers. It's also crucial for safety, as unbalanced tires can lead to vibrations and instability while driving.

To learn how wheel balancing is performed and how often you should have your wheels balanced, check out our blog post linked below!

What is the REPAIR Act?

The Right to Equitable and Professional Auto Industry Repair Act, or REPAIR Act, is a bill that was introduced to the House of Representatives by Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) on February 2, 2022 that:

1) Requires automobile manufacturers to make vehicle-generated data available to vehicle owners and their designees (i.e. repair shops) directly and in real-time.

2) Prevents automobile manufacturers from requiring or recommending the use of a particular brand's parts or tools during the repair process.

To find out why this bill is important, check out our new blog post https://www.wiltonautoandtire.com/About-Us/Blog/ArticleID/162/What-is-the-REPAIR-Act-and-Why-Does-It-Matter
