Connecticut’s Emissions Testing Requirements

Connecticut tests nearly 1.3 million vehicles annually to identify polluting vehicles needing repair. They aim to improve air quality and meet regulations imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Clean Air Act. Vehicles are required to undergo testing every two years. Owners can get this test done at any of the state-certified, privately owned commercial sites, like Wilton Auto and Tire Center. Are You Due?

Connecticut emissions testing dates are determined by state and federal requirements. The DMV will notify you via postcard within 45 days before your due date, so it’s important that you keep your address updated in their system. Any vehicle purchased at an authorized Connecticut dealer must be emissions compliant at the time of the sale. Vehicles purchased in a private sale within the state must be tested within 30 days of registration. By registering your name and address to the vehicle, you will receive future postcards. If you purchased out of state, it must be emission compliant before you have it registered in the state of Connecticut. Any vehicle that isn’t tested, doesn’t pass, or is not granted a waiver will not have its registration renewed by the DMV. You may be exempt from the Emissions Test Program if your vehicle meets any of the following criteria: younger than four model years old, made before 1997, gross weight rating of 10,001 lbs or more, composite vehicle, fully electric-power (not hybrid), bicycles with motors attached, motorcycles, vehicles registered by not designed primarily for highway use, farm vehicles, diesel-powered school buses, or vehicles with dealer, repairer or transporter plates.
