What is an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Test for Emissions?

OBD stands for On Board Diagnostics.  Most newer vehicles come equipped with onboard computers which are connected to sensors that measure the performance of the engine and what is emitted from the vehicle during operation.  On-Board Diagnostic testing works by your emissions testing facilitator connecting the emissions testing equipment directly to your vehicle's onboard computer and reading the performance of your car during normal operation, rather than simulating normal operation and measuring the results.  This method allows for early detection of vehicle performance problems that can contribute to higher levels of emissions and provides insight into future costly repairs that can be mitigated by taking action sooner.
